IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Reading, PA. - Mayor Wally Scott has issued a statement in response to the shots that rang out near City Park Thursday night.

The incident in Reading happened one block away from where kids in the Blacktop Basketball Summer League were playing a game.

In the statement, Scott and Police Chief Andres Dominguez say there will now be a strong police presence at the basketball program.

"The safety of our children is the most important," the mayor said.

The incident was unrelated to any players or spectators of the game.  Police say two people got into an argument at North 11th and Washington streets, and one of them fired a gun.

No one was hit by the bullets.  However, parents and children at the park ran for cover when the shots rang out.

Dominquez presented the mayor with a plan to increase police presence during the nightly events, including officers on bicycles.

"This program is a Reading tradition and we intend to do everything we can to preserve the integrity of the event," Dominguez said.
